The breed began its life on the border land between England and Scotland in the north of Great Britain about the time of the Industrial Revolution of the late 1700s. As the demand for mutton, lamb and wool grew throughout Britain and its Empire, these dogs were called into service to keep an eye on ever increasing herds of sheep. For this reason their skill and capacity as sheep and cattle dogs remains the one and only trait by which a true border collie is judged.

By nature these dogs prefer to gather up sheep rather than drove or tend them and this is why they are amazingly sensitive to commands given to them via whistles or cries from their owner. Shepherds and breeders look for great athletic skill in the dogs as well as obedience and livestock sense.
