Choosing dog names for your pet dog says as much about you as it does about your pet, it shows how you see your dog and your relationship with him or her.

Some names can influence the way people react to your dog and depending on your dog’s role it is important to choose a name that reflects its function. For example, dogs can be pets, therapy dogs, search and rescue experts, trackers or they can perform a variety of work with the public. Different places tend to produce different names and the most popular dog name in North America is Sam, Sammie or Samantha ('listener'). The second favorite name is Max, Maxie, Maxwell or Maxine (Latin: 'the greatest').

The runners-up are Lady, followed by Bear, Maggie, Buddy, Tasha, Chelsea (or Chelsie), Holly and Shasta. But other popular names include Brandy, Ginger and Taffy. This is a new trend because in the past people tended to name their dogs after a physical trait and so called their dogs Spot or Rover. So over a hundred dogs in San Fransisco are called Max but only one dog there is called Fido! And this just reflects the fact that many people think of their dogs as people and would much prefer to give them human names like Maggie and Alice for female dogs. But not all the names are just ordinary or common ones, and many people prefer more serious names like Wallace and Miles, or Zack and Zoe.

But the name your dog gets could reflect the gender of the owner, with men tending to give their dogs more masculine names like Spike or Gansta. Women tend to give their dogs female names such as Samantha or Natasha. This is quit understandable as men don’t really want to be in the park calling out dog names like Miss Kitty Poo Poo, Pooky or Booboo. Some trends in education and society also effect dog names and dogs that bite in the USA tend to be called Rocky, while fewer Latin students means less people want to call their dogs Fido (Latin: 'Faithful').

The fact that more people have to keep their dog on a leash means that names like Rover have also become less popular. Some names will always be unusual especially if you name a dog after your favorite author – Armistead (Armistead Maupin) or Anais (Anaid Ninn) – or if you let your children choose the name. They might call the dog Simba after the character in the Lion King. Your dog might also have a particular nationality so a German dog might be called Adolf or a French one Fifi.
